In 2005 the Connecticut General Assembly passed a
law that legalized embryonic stem cell research in
our state, and earmarked state funds to assist in
this important research that may have long-ranging
impact for those suffering from chronic or disabling
conditions such as Parkinson's Disease, Juvenile
Diabetes, spinal cord injuries, and more.
On the federal level, Congress and the current White
House administration have banned all but the most
limited approaches to stem cell research.
While the passage of this bill in Connecticut does
not outright contain language about abortion rights,
citizens can learn much about your own legislator's
position on choice from his or her vote on this
issue. The stem cell research bill was opposed by
the Catholic Conference because it permits research
on embryos. Lawmakers who oppose abortion were, in
many cases, persuaded by the Church arguments, and
it is not unreasonable to read this vote as rather
close to what a vote on an abortion related issue
might look like.
